We are blessed to perform the Monthly Mandalam Lord Ayyappa Pooja on the 4th Sunday of each month throughout the year. We also allow devotees to register for house puja on the 2nd Sunday of every month throughout the year. Each pooja will be conducted at the sacred Lord Ayyappa Sannidhi, commencing with an Abhishekam and Archana, followed by soulful Bhajans, Aarti, and the distribution of divine Prasadam.

We humbly invite all devotees to join us in these holy ceremonies and partake in the divine grace and blessings of Lord Ayyappa. Sponsorship opportunities are available for sacred rituals such as Padi Pooja, offering Swamy’s Vastram, and Annadanam. For more details, kindly reach out to the temple front desk.

We respectfully request all devotees to adorn traditional attire—Pancha, Dhoti, or Veshti—as a mark of reverence and devotion during the pooja.

Let us come together in unity and devotion to celebrate the glory of Lord Ayyappa.

Lord Ayyappa Deeksha

The Ayyappa Deeksha is a sacred vow filled with immense sanctity and discipline. To uphold the purity and spiritual essence of this divine observance, devotees are expected to follow the rules and practices outlined below:

  • Māla Dhārana (Wearing the Sacred Garland): Devotees must wear the sacred garland, made of Tulasi, Rudraksha, or a mala imprinted with Lord Ayyappa's image, as a symbol of their commitment to the Deeksha.
  • Addressing Devotees: Male devotees undertaking Ayyappa Deeksha are respectfully addressed as "Ayyappa" or "Swamy." Female devotees, eligible for Deeksha, aged below 8 years or above 50 years (post-menopause), are addressed as "Matha" or "Malikapuram."
  • Dress Code: During the Deeksha period, devotees must wear black attire—shirts, trousers, or sarees—as a mark of simplicity and devotion.
  • Duration of Deeksha: The Deeksha lasts for a period of 41 days (some traditions observe 48 days as Mandalam). During this time, devotees should dedicate themselves to serving Lord Ayyappa, treating every being as Ayyappa, and serving them with humility and love..
  • Daily Pooja Practices: Devotees should rise early, before sunrise to complete their daily routines and perform puja to Lord Ayyappa.
  • Temple Visits: It is auspicious for devotees to visit a temple daily, either in the morning or evening, and actively participate in Padi Puja.
  • Personal Grooming: Devotees should refrain from cutting their hair, nails, or shaving their beard during the Deeksha period. The focus should be on leading a simple, ascetic life, devoid of materialistic or beauty-enhancing practices.
  • Sleeping Arrangements: Devotees should avoid sleeping on comfortable mattresses. Instead, they should sleep on a simple mat to cultivate a sense of austerity.
  • Renouncing Worldly Desires: Throughout the Deeksha period, devotees should live like saints, renouncing all desires and material wants. Continuously chant the Moola Mantra, "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa," to stay focused and connected to the divine.
  • Dietary Discipline: Devotees should consume simple, non-spicy food, avoiding masala, garlic, and onion, to maintain a balanced state of mind and spiritual focus.
  • Consuming Food: Devotees should eat only at places where food is prepared and served by those observing Deeksha. Ideally, prepare your own meals at home or consume fruits and homemade juices.
  • Meal Frequency: It is recommended to follow "Eka Bhoktam," eating only one cooked meal per day. The second meal, if necessary, should consist of fruits and milk after performing puja.
  • Avoiding Intoxicants: Devotees should abstain from alcohol, smoking, and other intoxicants. Avoid anger, harsh speech, and negative thoughts, as these can detract from the sanctity of the Deeksha.
  • Focus on Spiritual Goal: Keep your focus on the spiritual purpose for taking Deeksha, offering pure devotion from your heart to receive the blessings of Lord Ayyappa.

By observing these practices with dedication and sincerity, devotees can fully immerse themselves in the divine grace of Lord Ayyappa and experience spiritual transformation.

Irumudi Yatra

Irumudi Kettu and Nei Thenga

Irumudi Kettu is a sacred travel pouch carried by devotees on their pilgrimage to Sabarimala, symbolizing their devotion and spiritual preparation. It consists of two compartments: the front, called Munmudi, and the back, known as Pinmudi. The Munmudi is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa and contains offerings such as coconut filled with ghee, rice, and other pooja items, while the Pinmudi holds the devotee’s personal belongings.

The word "Iru" signifies "two," and "Kettu" means "knot" or "bundle." The Irumudi Kettu is of utmost significance in the Sabarimala pilgrimage, representing the dual responsibilities of the devotee—service to the Lord and care for oneself.

The preparation of the Irumudi Kettu, known as Kettu Nirakkal or Palli Kettu, is performed under the guidance of a Guruswami, an experienced devotee who oversees the ritual. Only those who have observed the strict Vratham (41-day vow of fasting, purity, and devotion) are eligible to carry this sacred bundle.

The Irumudi Kettu is essential to ascend the holy Pathinettam Padi—the 18 sacred steps that lead to the sanctum of Lord Ayyappa. It is a divine privilege, and without the Irumudi Kettu, devotees are not permitted to pass through this stairway. This practice symbolizes the surrender of the devotee's ego and worldly attachments before receiving the blessings of the Lord.

The 18 Holy Steps - Patinettampadi

The Patinettampadi, or the 18 Holy Steps, holds profound spiritual significance for devotees of Lord Ayyappa. These sacred steps can only be ascended by those who have observed a strict Vratham (fasting and austerity) for 41 days and carry the divine Irumudi Kettu on their heads.

The Patinettampadi is imbued with numerous layers of mythology and symbolism:

  • Some believe that the eighteen steps represent the 18 Puranas.
  • Others interpret them as the 18 weapons with which Lord Ayyappa vanquished evil forces.
  • A popular belief is that the first five steps symbolize the five Indriyas (senses): eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin.
  • The next eight steps signify the Ashtaragas (emotional traits): Tatwa, Kama (desire), Krodha (anger), Moha (delusion), Lobha (greed), Madha (pride), Matsarya (envy), and Ahamkara (ego).
  • The following three steps represent the three Gunas (fundamental qualities): Satwa (purity), Rajas (passion), and Tamas (ignorance).
  • The final two steps denote Vidya (knowledge) and Avidya (ignorance).

The Patinettampadi can be used only twice during the pilgrimage—once while ascending towards the temple and once while descending. Before stepping onto the sacred steps, devotees break coconuts as an offering, signifying the surrender of ego and seeking divine blessings. The devotees must carry the sacred Irumudi on their heads while ascending and descending the 18 steps.

As a mark of utmost reverence, while descending the steps, devotees face the sanctum sanctorum, stepping backward, symbolizing their respect and continued surrender to Lord Ayyappa.

May the sacred Patinettampadi guide each pilgrim towards spiritual awakening and divine grace.

From the beginning of Vratham, devotees should take a bath twice daily—at the break of dawn and after sunset—cleansing both body and soul. Offer a simple pooja during these times, dedicating your prayers to Lord Ayyappa.
Chant sacred slokas like Ayyappa/Sastha Ashtothram and complete your pooja by reciting the 108 Saranams with deep reverence.
  • Brahmacharyam (Celibacy):
Maintain strict Brahmacharyam throughout the Vratham period, embodying purity in thoughts, words, and deeds. This self-discipline helps in connecting with the divine energy of Lord Ayyappa.
  • Simplicity in Diet:
Consume only what is necessary to sustain the body. Avoid indulgence and partake in simple, sattvic food as an offering to the divine within you.
  • Sacred Silence:
Speak sparingly and only when necessary. Use your words wisely, channeling your energy into silent devotion and contemplation of Lord Ayyappa.
  • Devotion in Duty:
Whatever your daily responsibilities, perform them with unwavering devotion to Lord Ayyappa. Let your work be a prayer, an offering at the feet of the Lord.
  • Universal Love:
See the divine in all beings. Treat every living creature with kindness and compassion, for they are all expressions of the same divine consciousness.
  • Constant Chanting:
Keep the divine mantra, “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa” on your lips and in your heart. Chant it often, especially while speaking with fellow devotees, to invoke the Lord’s presence.
  • Satsang and Sangha:
Stay in the company of fellow Ayyappa devotees. Share in their bhakti and learn from their experiences, enriching your own journey of faith and devotion.
  • Active Participation:
Engage actively in poojas and bhajans. Let the divine melodies and sacred rituals elevate your soul and deepen your connection with Lord Ayyappa.

Even when tested, remain calm and composed. Respond to every challenge with the gentle yet powerful invocation, “Saranam Ayyappa,” and let the Lord guide you through.
  • Respectful Address:
Address all men as “Ayyappa or Swami,” and women and girls, including your wife, as “Maligapuram.” Boys should be lovingly called “Manikanta.” This fosters unity and reminds us that we are all children of the Lord.
  • Devotion in Every Thought, Word, and Deed:
Let every action, every word, and every thought be filled with devotion to Lord Ayyappa. Surrender yourself completely at His lotus feet.
  • Sacred Attire:
Though there is no mandated dress code, wearing black, blue, or saffron attire symbolizes your observance of Deeksha and your commitment to the Lord.
  • Holy Marks:
Adorn your forehead with Viboothi, Kumkumam, Chandanam, as a constant reminder of your devotion and purity of purpose.
